Conveniently located to serve San Ramon, Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, and Danville

At BlossomMD Med Spa & Wellness, we offer a variety of acne scar treatments for San Ramon patients. While the specific causes of acne is yet to be determined, there are indeed a number of factors that may play a role in its development. Genetics, as well as hormonal shifts that occur throughout puberty, pregnancy, and then before or during women’s menstrual cycles, are also factors to consider. Stress, oil-clogging beauty products, and medications including birth control or corticosteroids can also cause acne. Acne breakouts can occur at any time in a person’s life.

These breakouts often occur when pores in the skin get clogged with dead cells and oil. Acne bacteria can multiply in clogged pores, which can lead to irritation and scarring.
Acne breakouts can be mild or severe and can result in prominent scarring. The best approach is to get proper treatment so that scarring is reduced, making the skin smoother.

Why Does Acne Scarring/Pigmentation Happen?

Acne scars are the consequence of acne lesions becoming inflamed. The pore swells due to inflammation, and the pore wall begins to break down. Some acne lesions are minor, leaving shallow scars that heal fast. Blemishes can sometimes discharge their contents into the surrounding tissue, causing severe scarring.

Types of scarring

  • Ice-pick scars –These are scars that are deep, thin, and pitted.
  • Rolling scars – slope depressions with a broad edge
  • Boxcar scars – depressions with a wide range of sizes and finely defined edges
  • Atrophic scars – scars that are flat, thin, or depressed
  • Hypertrophic or keloid scars – thick lumpy scars

Once an acne problem heals, it sometimes leaves dark marks behind. When your skin becomes inflamed as a result of an injury or an acne breakout, it produces more melanin (pigment), which causes the region to darken. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the term for this condition.

Excessive sun exposure may compound the problem, as skin produces melanin to protect itself. If sun exposure is unavoidable, it is critical to use sunscreen on a daily basis and consistently.

Acne Scar/Pigmentation Treatment Methods

There are several treatment methods available to safely reduce acne scars. The proper treatment method for you will be determined by our experienced skin experts based on the type of scars, severity, and individual skin type. You may be advised on home care and medication as well.

Often, a combination of approaches is required.

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

Vivace RF microneedling is highly effective for getting rid of acne scarring. This cosmetic procedure uses radiofrequency waves and tiny microneedles to rejuvenate acne-scarred skin.

The procedure works by creating controlled micro injuries in the tissues to stimulate healing and new cell growth. The tissues are also heated internally by the RF energy. Both of these modalities encourage the production of elastin and collagen for new smooth skin.

Skinpen Microneedling

The SkinPen is another microneedling method and is safe for most skin types. This FDA-approved device is minimally invasive and requires little downtime.

A SkinPen has a sterile tip with 12 tiny needles, which make evenly spaced punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s healing response, resulting in new elastin and collagen at the site.

The procedure, when performed on the entire face, takes about 20 minutes. As with RF microneedling, numbing ointment is used beforehand for patient comfort so in total it will take about an hour.

HydraFacial Treatment

Also called hydra-dermabrasion, this patented treatment is like a regular facial but offers much better results. This non-invasive procedure involves exfoliation of dead skin cells and the application of hydrating serums.

The HydraFacial process consists of three steps: deep cleaning, exfoliation, and hydration. It treats acne and related scarring, dry skin, and wrinkles quite effectively. It promotes collagen growth in the skin to treat mild acne scarring.

Preventing New Acne Scars

To reduce the risk of further acne scarring:

  • Do not scratch or pick at pimples during a breakout.
  • Treat acne as soon as possible with face washes and medication. This will reduce the chance of scarring.
  • If you smoke, you must quit, since smoking negatively affects skin health.
  • Wear sunscreen at all times.
  • Use vitamin C products to protect your skin
  • Maintaining skincare/ skin procedures

How Much Does Acne Scar Treatment Cost?

The price of your acne scar treatment will depend on a number of factors. The treatment modality you choose, the number of acne scars to be treated, and the number of sessions required will all play a role in determining cost.
